>> good morning, i'm >> good morning, i'm congressman ron barber from southern arizona. currently completing the term that was served by congresswoman gabrielle giffords. i come to this issue from a number of perspectives. on january 8, 2011, i was standing beside congresswoman as the district director when a gunman charged forward and opened up. i saw him shoot the congresswoman. i decided that day, the judge died and my colleague died. in 45 seconds, 30 bullets were discharged from one clip. 45 seconds. 19 people were down. six of them died. that was an extended clip. the gunman had another one in his pocket and two shorter ones in his pocket and had it not been for the quick action, the courageous action of people there, he would have loaded and 30 more bullets would have been discharged. i come to this issue as a parent and a grandparent. i was on my way to the rural part of my district on friday when i heard the news about the shootings in connecticut. first i heard three had died. that was bad enough, and then i heard 20 children had died. i was devastated. i have two grandc

another fell into an icy lake. >> check this out. abc's ron claiborne tells us they were all trying to rescue one another. >> reporter: it began when one man accidently slipped off of a sheet of ice and into the lake. the people you see in this video are members of a sledding excursion that goes terribly wrong. >> we saw this guy coming across the ice really fast. it went from cheering to all of a sudden just an unbelievable amount of panic and chaos. >> reporter: one man goes to the ice's edge to help, but then he falls in. and then one would-be rescuer after another, tries to help, only to plunge in themselves, in a chain reaction. a crowd gathers on shore, screaming for help. >> call 911! >> reporter: five minutes after the first man went in, nearly a dozen people are now in the water, as others throw roping and enter tubes. you can hear them calling for someone to bring a rope. >> it was very hard to watch. it was gut wrenching. >> reporter: finally, nine minutes into this ordeal on ice, everyone somehow manages to scramble out. amazingly, this escapade on ice ended happily. eve

." that was the word today from ron barber, who was shot and wounded in the mass shooting in tucson last year that killed six people and wounded 13, including the grievous wounding of congresswoman gabby giffords. ron barber, who took gabby giffords' seat in congress after she stepped down to deal with her injuries. he said today, "as those of us in tucson know, senseless acts such as these tear at the very fabric of a community." mark kelly, gabby giffords' husband said today, "i just spoke with gabby, and she sends her prayers from tucson." in oak creek, wisconsin, where four months ago there was another mass shooting at a sikh temple, another six people gunned down at that temple. a school superintendent there today told the local press that she cried when she heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said "we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere." the mayor of aurora, colorado, is still helping his community try to recover from the mass shooting there this summer where 12 people
